With the aim of strengthening our leadership in sustainability, Isla Negra Wines is implementing in a major change in the inputs we use in its products. The conventional bottles used in the massive ranges - Isla Negra Dual and Isla Negra Reserva - will be replaced by bottles on average 12% lighter, which will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) generated from the manufacture and transport of this input. This change is part of a global operation of environmental care, which central focus is to reduce the carbon emissions generated by the company in the wine production process.

Bottles are a critical imput in the carbon footprint of the wine industry, becoming one of the central focus of environmental concern for Isla Negra. As glass needs very high temperatures for its manufacture, large amounts of energy are required, what causes significant GHG emissions as result of the fuel combustion. Nevertheless, by using less amount of glass in the production of each bottle we help to reduce the emissions produced. In addition, it also achieves fuel efficiency across the transport chain of wines (both land and sea), because the loading of containers is lighter.

It is important to emphasize that the new lightweight bottles used by Isla Negra ensure the same quality and resistance than conventional bottles.
In order to invite the consumer to learn more about this innovative project, Isla Negra lightweight bottles that are currently on the market have the website address written on the back label.

10 years ago, the winemaker Cecilia Padilla joined Cono Sur and since then has been firmly committed to Isla Negra wines. Her curiosity, intuition and passion for good wine have encourage her creativity to be adventurous in experimenting with rare varieties and blends, and to give each of Isla Negra range unique characteristics, so that they become the best examples of the attractive qualities of the New World.

Have you always wanted to be winemaker?
Actually, no. I new I wanted to be an agronomist, as I’ve always loved countryside and nature, but I got to know winemaking when I first started studying it. Obviously I wasn’t wrong, because I love it and it’s my biggest passion.

Do you think that being a woman influence your winemaking vision?
I think the connection you have with your senses is more direct when you are a woman, and that helps a lot when deciding the special signature you’ll give the wine you’re creating.

What satisfies you most about your profession?
Constantly playing with your senses when you’re creating a product that carries your very essence.

Which words would you choose to describe Isla Negra Wines?
Youth, spark, juicyness, elegance and power.

Which range of Isla Negra Wines identifies you more? Why?
Isla Negra High Tide, for it gives me more possibilities to let my imagination fly free.

Is there any variety you prefer to work with?
I think Sauvignon Blanc is by far the most delicate and therefore the variety that needs more care, but it’s also the noblest, as in its fermentation process it will never give you any unpleasant surprises.

And any one you like the most?
I’m usually more of a white wine person. I lean towards the subtlety of a rich nose and a round, juicy, fresh mouth.

Where do you see your career is heading?
In the short term, I’d like to consolidate myself as a Top Woman Winemaker of these new generations.

Isla Negra is a very popular place in Chile for artists because in this same land Chilean Nobel prize winner Pablo Neruda built one of his famous houses. He actually bought a very small house in 1939 overlooking the ocean, and gradually enlarged it. The excuse for acquiring this – at the beginning very humble – property, was that he was in need for a place that would inspire him in order to fully concentrate in his writing. A goal in which he apparently succeeded, as in this house he wrote his “Canto General”, one of his masterpieces and work that earned him the Nobel Prize. The only real attraction the small house had was an incomparable view of the magnificent Pacific Ocean, of which the writer was a loyal fan and admirer. From practically every window, Neruda could gaze at the ocean’s huge waves rising to the sky until almost transparent, and then breaking furiously into enormous rocks. The house, in fact, through its architecture and various objects present, permanently reminds the visitor of boats and the closeness to the sea.

Over many years the writer enjoys the gradual enlargement of his house, which also implies coming up with ingenious solutions for displaying his many collections. As he ones wrote: “In my house I’ve had toys big and small, and I could not live without them. I have also built my house as a toy, and I play in it from morning to evening” . There are in fact more than 3500 inventoried objects in the house… all of which were remarkably value to the poet. His sea-shell collection is amazing and really enhances the closeness to the sea.

Visiting this place is undoubtedly an extraordinary experience, and many have written about the different feelings this unusual place provokes: “I confess I have come” (Confieso que he venido) wrote Uruguayan Nobel prize winner Gabriel García Márquez, ingeniously referring to Neruda’s memoirs “I confess that I’ve lived” (Confieso que he vivido). What’s so amazing about this place is not the impression of visiting a house of luxury, but quite the opposite, of a place of very complicated simplicity, where everything has been displayed with the only aim of being surrounded by every small ownable thing. It’s the demonstration of the conscientious decisions behind an artist who creates life inside the many walls of his house, as there’s much drama and sense of theatre in every corner. Everything I soaked up in scenery and creativity, comprising experiences, life, present and past.

Pablo Neruda spent the last years of his life staring at the ocean from his Isla Negra home. He died on September 23rd 1973 and was buried in the courtyard of his house, where there is a gravestone in his memory. Twelve years later, his beloved wife Matilde Urrutia died, and her body was buried next to him.

Combine correctly a meal with the right wine is essential, because only then is possible to highlight its qualities and enhance its flavour.

The stock used in risotto must always be heated.

Ingredients
•2 tablespoons unsalted butter
•1 small onion, finely chopped
•2 cups arborio or carnaroli rice
•1/2 bottle Isla Negra Sparkling
•3 cups beef or chicken stock, heated
•1/2 cup double cream
•1/4 cup freshly grated parmesan cheese, plus more for table
•Salt to taste

- Melt the butter in a heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven. Stir in the onion and sauté until translucent. Do not brown.
- Stir in the rice and the rice and stir and stir with a wooden spoon, until toasted and opaque, 3 to 4 minutes.
- Add half the sparkling wine, bring to the boil and simmer until it is almost absorbed, stirring. Add a third of the stock and simmer until is absorbed, stirring all the while. - Repeat the process with the champagne and stock until the rice is just tender and creamy, about 18 to 20 minutes. Warm the cream in a small saucepan. When the rice is cooked, stir in the cream and cheese and season with salt. Serve straight away.

For this delicious preparation, Isla Negra winemaker Cecilia Padilla suggests Isla Negra High Tide Cabernet Sauvignon: “ It’s intense aromas and flavourful palate are a perfect companion for a rich dish like this.”

Isla Negra Wines were tasted by more than 500 members of the British wine trade and consumers.

Since 2003 the Annual Trade Tasting, one of Europe’s favourite wine events, has taken part in London, and since that very same year, Isla Negra wines have been part of this occasion.

The tasting was a success, as more than 500 members of the British wine trade and consumers had the opportunities to taste all sorts of wines, meet the winemakers, and appreciate diverse presentations related to our wine and country, with a special emphasis on Chile’s cool climate Sauvignon Blanc, and one of the signature grapes Carmenere.
We certainly look forward to next year’s Annual Tasting.
